  Tech in 2012: The end of unlimited Internet and the return of UBB
  Get ready to start paying for your lunch with your smartphone and to welcome another tablet into your home.
  
  According to analysts with Deloitte & Touche LLP, 2012 will bring about the end of unlimited Internet, the increased proliferation of touchscreen tablet computers and the rise of smartphone wallets using near field communications (NFC) technology.
  
  Below is a quick preview of Deloitte’s predictions for 2012.
  
  1. ‘Big data’ becomes a big deal
  More than 90% of all Fortune 500 companies will have some big data initiatives underway by the end of 2012,  in hopes of managing their “overflowing data warehouses.” The financial services, retail, entertainment, media and public sectors will follow the Internet industry to foster US$1.5-billion in new development projects over the next 12 months, which would be up more than ten fold from 2009 levels. “This will signal a demand for skilled talent which, in Canada, could grow to 15,000 more professionals within the next five years,” Deloitte said.
  
  2. NFC goes beyond mobile payments
  The number of NFC-enabled mobile devices available for purchase will double by the end of 2012, Deloitte predicts, enabling the widespread ability of a smartphone or tablet to securely transmit small amounts of data over very short distances. “NFC has been dominated by the ‘wave and pay’ notion which, in effect, incorporates a credit card into a mobile phone thereby creating a ‘digital wallet’” Deloitte said. “However, for this application to take off, consumer misperceptions about the security and battery-draining aspects of NFC will need to be overcome.” In the meantime, the company expects thousands of other NFC functions from gambling to gaming to health care and security will gain traction this year.
