Samoan-born Lemi Ponifasio and his New Zealand-based company MAU have concocted a delightfully nightmarish performance, with diverse forms of inspiration including traditional Pacific Islands dance and culture, Butoh, Shakespeare, Paul Klee, and post-colonial fallout. Combining dance, theater, and oratory, the imagery and movement of Tempest: Without a Body oscillates between ceremony and seizure, while the equally wide range of sound ranges from unanticipated shrieks and electronic tangs to barking dogs. The complete and unrelenting arsenal of audio/visuals in Tempest is not for the faint of heart, but there’s an inherent humanity and beauty, too.
See this fascinating exhibit on April 2nd and 3rd at REDCAT in Los Angeles.
